Local insurance company brings parents and teens together with ?Time2Drive?

CENTERVILLE ? North Side Insurance brought Time2Drive, a teen driving safety program sponsored by Allied Insurance, to Centerville High School on Sept. 27 and 28.

This fun, interactive event helps teens and parents better understand the risks young drivers face when they get behind the wheel. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2010), motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens ? accounting for more than one in three deaths in this age group.

Highlights of the event included:

?A driving simulator ? teens got behind the wheel of the simulator to learn, firsthand, about the dangers of distracted driving

?Fatal Vision Goggles ? teens were able to see how dangerous intoxicated driving really is

?Young drivers learned ways to become better drivers and were encouraged to think about the consequences of poor choices they might make on the road

?Iowa?s teen driving laws were covered

?Parents and teens signed a commitment form to promote good driving behavior

Amy Gonnerman of North Side Insurance said, ?North Side Insurance, Centerville Community School District and Allied Insurance all have the same goal ? to keep our teens safe on the roads. Time2Drive is a great way to show teens how to avoid accidents and tickets. It helps parents and teens find some common ground when it comes to safe driving, too.?

Students who returned their Driving Commitment Form to the school office were entered into a drawing for one of two iPads. Students were also given the opportunity to guess the number of gumballs in a container. They weren?t told ahead of time what the number represented, but it was revealed at Pep Chapel. There were 1,318 gumballs in the container and this number represented the number of vehicles in Iowa involved in accidents in 2011 due to the driver being distracted by the use of a cell phone or mobile device. North Side Insurance came back to the school during Homecoming Pep Chapel to give away the iPads and the gumballs. The winner of the gumballs was Jeremy Stufflebeam and the iPad winners were Taran McCoy and Desmond Becker.
