Petraeus' biographer a military reservist, scholar

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Paula Broadwell first met fellow West Point graduate David Petraeus in the spring of 2006, when she was a graduate student at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.

He was a lieutenant general working on a counterinsurgency manual that would be tested during his command in Iraq. The university had invited him to give a speech.

Broadwell was in the Army Reserve after being recalled three times to active duty since the Sept. 11 attacks to work on counterterrorism issues and intended to return to active duty or get into the policy world, according to the preface of the Petraeus biography she would later write with a Washington Post editor.

Petraeus, who held much-praised military commands in Iraq and Afghanistan, resigned Friday after admitting he had an extramarital affair, a disclosure that ended the retired four-star general's civilian career as director of the CIA.

He carried on the affair with Broadwell, now 40, according to several U.S. officials with knowledge of the situation. The officials spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to discuss publicly the investigation that led to the resignation. The FBI discovered the relationship by monitoring Petraeus' emails, after investigators were alerted that Broadwell may have had access to his personal email account, two of the officials said.

Broadwell wrote in the preface to "All In: The Education of General David Petraeus," published by Penguin in January, that while at Harvard, Petraeus passed along his card and offered to help her academic work on leadership. The book's ranking on Amazon.com jumped from 76,792 on Friday to 111 by midday Saturday.

"I later discovered that he was famous for this type of mentoring and networking, especially with aspiring soldier-scholars," Broadwell wrote, adding that "I took full advantage of his open-door policy to seek insight and share perspectives."

Broadwell is a research associate at Harvard's Center for Public Leadership and a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of War Studies at King's College London, according to her biography on Penguin's website. According to The Bismarck (N.D.) Tribune, she grew up in North Dakota and moved to Charlotte, N.C., more than three years ago with her husband, a radiologist, and their two young sons.

The book began as research for her dissertation, a case study of Petraeus' leadership. It evolved into an authorized biography written with Washington Post editor Vernon Loeb after President Barack Obama put Petraeus in charge of Afghanistan in 2010.

Two years earlier, she wrote in the book's preface, while visiting Washington he had invited her to join him and his team for a run along the Potomac River.

"I'd earned varsity letters in cross-country and indoor and outdoor track and finished at the top of my class for athletics at West Point; I wanted to see if he could keep stride during an interview. Instead it became a test for me," she wrote. He eventually increased the pace "until the talk turned to heavy breathing, and we reached a 6-minute-per-mile pace. It was a signature Petraeus move. I think I passed the test, but I didn't bother to transcribe the interview."

In the Army Reserve, she specialized in military intelligence, spending time at the U.S. Special Operations Command and the FBI Counterterrorism Task Forces before pursuing an academic career, according to her Penguin bio. She "lived, worked, or traveled in more than 60 countries during more than 15 years of military service and work in geopolitical analysis and counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations," her bio states.

Broadwell made multiple trips to Afghanistan, with unprecedented access to Petraeus, and also spent time with his commanders across the country.

When Petraeus left the military and took the job at the CIA, Broadwell kept in contact with him and sometimes was invited to his office for events such as his meeting with actress Angelina Jolie.

"History has yet to fully judge Petraeus' service in Iraq and Afghanistan, his impact on the U.S. military and his rank among America's wartime leaders," Broadwell wrote in the preface. "But there is no denying that he achieved a great deal during his 37-year Army career, not the least of which was regaining the strategic initiative in both wars" after Sept. 11, 2001.

"His critics fault him for ambition and self-promotion. I will note in the pages that follow that he is driven and goal-oriented, but his energy, optimism and will to win stand out more for me than the qualities seized on by his critics."

In an interview with The Bismarck Tribune shortly after the biography was published, Broadwell said Petraeus was a motivational force not only for organizations but individuals as well.

"He inspires people of all ages to improve themselves. On that note, I would conclude that his sheer energy whether applied to soldiering, scholarly pursuits, public outreach or mentoring can be equally empowering for an organization or an individual subordinate," Broadwell said.

With the book done, Broadwell told friends she was returning to her dissertation, using part of her research on Petraeus to complete her doctorate.

Cashing In a Structured Settlement | Finance World | vytulyperop

Just because you have received a structured settlement for your lawsuit or insuracne claim, it does not mean you have to wait years to get the money you have comming to you. There are several settlement purchasing companies that will give you quick cash for your structured settlement. Such companies can pay cash for your entire structured settlement or purchase your remaining settlement payments. You can spend this lump sum payment on anything you wish such as a house, college tuition, business investments or debts.

What Is a Structured Settlement?

A structured settlement typically results from a personal injury lawsuit. This is an agreement where you agree to accept periodic payments over time in exchange for the release of liability of your claim. A structured settlement can provide payments in almost any manner that you choose. An example is a settlement that may be paid in annual installments over a number of years. Another is getting settlement payments in periodic payouts every few years.

These kinds of payments are generally awarded through the purchase of one or more annuities from a life insurance company. Structured settlements can also be given with lottery winnings, contest prize money and any other situation where there is a substantial cash award.

Structured Settlements May Not Always the Best Fit

Structured settlements are designed to provide some long-term financial security to injury victims through payments that are tax free. For most people, the agreed upon structured settlement payment plan initially makes sense. However if a financial emergency, business opportunity, unforeseen medical expense, or a house purchase can put a strain on the injured party?s finances.

In this case the structured nature of the settlement may get to be too restrictive to cover major financial purchases. A structured settlement may also not be the best option for investing. There are several other investment vehicles that can generate far greater long-term return than the annuities that are used in structured settlements. Therefore, some people may be better off getting cash for their structured settlement payments and then begin building their own investment portfolio.

How Getting Cash for a Structured Settlement Works

If you receive an award from your injury case, your attorney or financial advisor may very likely recommend getting periodic installment payments versus giving you a lump sum of cash up front for your structured settlement. Then an independent third party can purchase an annuity that will provide you with tax-free periodic payments.

Companies that will offer cash for structured settlements have a variety of programs that will allow you to access any portion of your annuity. For an example, you may want to sell as few as four year?s worth of payments and receive a lump-sum payment while still enjoying some portion of your monthly payments. Or you could even sell your settlement for a large payment that is five or six years in the future. You could also customize an arrangement to get cash for a structured settlement based on your own unique needs.

Here is an example of how obtaining cash for a structured settlement works: Let?s say you were in an accident seven years ago. The accident caused you to be hospitalized for several months and undergo nearly a year and a half?s worth of physical therapy. So you hire an attorney and sued the responsible individual-or, rather, the person?s insurance company. Ultimately, your attorney advises you that you will be awarded a substantial sum of money.

After several months or years of negotiation, you receive a very nice sized settlement. However, the cash you will get upfront is only enough to cover the medical expenses you have accumulated. The rest of your compensation is scheduled to be paid out in regular installments through an annuity over the next 15 to 30 years. Instead of being restricted to a monthly or annual payments, you choose to contact a settlement purchaser to secure immediate cash for your structured settlement. You?re then able to use that cash to enhance your current cash flow-rather than waiting on periodic settlement payments.

The Legal Issues of Receiving Cash for a Structured Settlement

If you?re thinking about getting cash for your structured settlement, it?s important to contact a financial advisor. Most states have specific regulations that can limit the sale of structured settlements, so you will need court approval to receive cash for your structured settlement. Federal restrictions can also affect the sale of structured settlements to a third-party individual. Some insurance companies won?t transfer annuities to third parties.

Also, before you even try to obtain cash for a structured settlement, be sure to do your homework. Make sure to check out multiple companies to see which one can offer you the most cash for your structured settlement. You may also want to examine their integrity, reputation and track record. This will help ensure you have the most positive experience obtaining cash for your structured settlement.

Receiving cash for a structured settlement can very well be an ideal option if you need a lump sum of money to satisfy your immediate needs.

Paraguay action film thrills and challenges

ASUNCION, Paraguay (AP) ? A new action movie featuring a poor delivery boy whose life depends on the mysterious cargo in his wheelbarrow has Paraguayans excited and proud to see their gritty reality on the big screen for the first time.

While audiences have been delighted by "7 Cajas," the movie shot in a chaotic market in this South American capital has nevertheless jarred many with its focus on the darker angles it shows: a suffocating mix of official negligence, societal indifference, police corruption and organized crime that keeps most of the population mired in poverty.

"I loved the movie," said 30-year old architect Antonella Cantero. "It is just that for some of us it becomes hard to watch, something that is so tough and so common at the same time, and we prefer to hide."

It's an odd mix of emotions for people unaccustomed to seeing any cinematic depiction at all of their country. The nation's movie industry is virtually nonexistent, and U.S. films dominate the country's fewer than 15 theaters, most of them in the capital of Asuncion.

"Fast and Furious on Wheelbarrows" is how one critic described "7 Cajas," referring to the action series about heists and street races. It has wowed festival audiences, filled Paraguay's theaters since August and will soon be distributed around the world.

The film is drawing comparisons to India's "Slumdog Millionaire" in how it gets audiences rooting for a poor slum kid, Victor, a wheelbarrow delivery boy summoned by a small-time crook to carry a mysterious load of boxes across the market for $100 ? a huge fortune for a slum kid in a country where the extremely poor don't make $2.50 a day.

"Listen up, little one. You must protect these seven boxes with your life. Understand? And when the boxes show up again, I'll give you the other half," the crook says, tearing the $100 greenback in two.

Things quickly get complicated along the slum's dark corridors, where Victor runs for his life from criminals and police.

The fast-paced film has cinematic touches straight from Hollywood, but also an authenticity that comes from being shot on location with a relatively inexpensive camera on a budget of just $650,000.

Except for the central characters, nearly everyone who appears in the film lives or works in Municipal Market No. 4, a sprawling collection of tents, shacks and building corridors in downtown Asuncion. There, practically anything can be bought or sold, from legal products to smuggled fruit, stolen cell phones and fake DVDs. Even illegal drugs can be purchased clandestinely by buyers who know where to look for them. The characters speak jopara, a street language that mixes Paraguay's two official languages, Spanish and the native Guarani.

Paraguayan directors Juan Carlos Maneglia and Tana Schembori told The Associated Press they aimed to make a fun film, not a social statement.

"Maybe it was a very unconscious objective," Maneglia conceded. "It really wasn't my intention to depict our reality faithfully, but for it to be entertaining, and to have an interesting message."

Celso Franco, the 23-year-old first-time actor who stars as Victor, said he sees the film as a protest.

"We are so tired of some things; we want people to see our reality," said Franco, who was raised by his grandmother in Paraguay's countryside after his parents left for Spain to work and send money home to support him and his brothers.

"This is a demonstration of how we are living in Paraguay and we know that it reaches people in power, and at least they'll feel a little bit guilty, the ones in power now who can change some things," Franco said.

The evident poverty of the characters is a reality for most of Paraguay's 6.5 million people. While booming soy prices have raised the country's gross domestic product for three straight years, a tiny upper class has held onto nearly all the wealth. Democratic governments have failed to budge the 55 percent poverty rate since a 35-year dictatorship ended in a coup in 1989. Of the nation's impoverished, 31 percent live in extreme poverty, according to U.N. statistics.

International distributor Shoreline Entertainment is expected to bring "7 Cajas" to audiences around the world next year, shaping first and lasting impressions about Paraguay.

"I don't understand why people come out laughing from the movie theaters like it was a comedy," said Silvia Mongelos, 31, who works in an environmental foundation. "The movie is a social protest, from beginning to end, of our terrible reality."

Maneglia, the director, emphatically denies trying to send that message.

"It's too big of a responsibility," Maneglia said. "I don't think it encompasses all we are."

Shoreline Vice President Sam Eigen agreed. "Before it focuses on any kind of social issues or relates to a particular situation in Paraguay, the feeling after watching the film is that its first priority is to be fun and entertaining," Eigen said.

The filmmakers got funding from Paraguay's government, cultural foundations and a private bank, but still came up short until they won a 100,000-euro ($128,000) "Films In Progress" award at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain last year, allowing them to finish the low-budget project.

The finished film won San Sebastian's Youth Award this year, along with Best Dramatic Feature at Sydney's Cockatoo Island Film Festival. Showings then sold out at the Toronto Film Festival in September, where Shoreline outbid other distributors for the international rights.

"People couldn't stop clapping, some had tears in their eyes," Schembori said of the Toronto event.

"7 Cajas" isn't among this year's record 71 submissions for best Foreign Language Film. Without any experience in such matters, the producers and the government's culture secretary missed the Academy Awards' submission deadline.

The film has sold a national record 300,000 tickets at about $5.50 apiece since "7 Cajas" premiered in August. Its producers now plan to travel the country showing the movie in churches and gathering halls, sometimes to people who have never seen films on a big screen before.

They're also organizing a free showing inside Municipal Market No. 4, keeping a promise they made to the workers there.

"They feel like this is their movie," said Schembori. "It is their movie."

MoneyGram agrees to settle scam charges

(AP) ? MoneyGram said Friday that it has agreed to set up a $100 million compensation fund as part of a settlement of government allegations of fraud through money-transfer scams from 2003 to 2009.

Under the terms of the deal with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania and the Department of Justice, MoneyGram International Inc. said it has also taken other steps to prevent more scams. These include adding more investigators and beefing up technology to detect fraud.

The payment services provider said it has terminated relationships with the agents suspected of masterminding the fraud. It said it has also overhauled its corporate compliance program and began a new training program for agents to better sniff out and report scams.

The company previously set aside the money to compensate victims.

"The conduct described in the (settlement agreement) is unacceptable to MoneyGram and counter to everything we strive to stand for," said Pamela H. Patsley, chairman and chief executive officer, in a statement. "We take compliance very seriously at MoneyGram, and nothing angers us more than when our services are used to perpetrate illegal activity."

The Dallas-based company also said Friday that it lost $54.1 million, or 77 cents per share, in its third quarter due to costs related to the fraud settlement and related legal expenses. It had net income of $15.8 million, or 22 cents per share, a year ago.

Its revenue rose 5 percent to $338.6 million from $322 million a year ago.

It now expects full-year earnings to come in at the low end of its previous expectations.

Hedy Lamarr - a Hollywood Star Invents Secure Communication

On November 9, 1913, Hollywood movie star Hedy Lamar was born, co-inventor of an early form of the spread spectrum communications and frequency hopping, necessary for wireless communication from the pre-computer age to the present day.

Ok, I assume that you are not necessarely familiar with spread spectrum communications technology. But, maybe you are wondering even more about a Hollywood movie star diva, who should be responsible for the development of this kind of advanced technology...and even more so already in the early 1940s. Well, Hedy Lamarr really was an extraordinary woman. She was born as Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler in Vienna into a well of Jewish family as a beloved only child. Her mother was a renowned pianist and her father a successful bank director. Already at the age of 16 she started a successful career in acting.

The famous director Max Reinhardt casted her in Berlin in the play 'The Weaker Sex' and called her ?the most beautiful woman in the world?. In 1933 Lamarr performed in the Czech art film 'Ecstasy', a film that became notorious for Lamarr?s face in the throes of orgasm filmed in close-up and her full nudity in some scenes. At age 19 Lamarr gave up her career for what seemed at first a fairy-tale existence and married Friedrich Mandl, a man 13 years her senior, one of the richest men in Austria and a munitions manufacturer mogul with close connections to Italian fascist leader Benito Mussolini. Mandl was described to be extremely controlling, preventing Hedy from pursuing her acting career and keeping her a virtual prisoner in his mansions. On the other hand, Mandl threw glittering dinner parties where generals and scientists - as munition manufacturer his so-called brothers-in-arms - entertained the child bride by bragging about their advances in missile technology. A few years later in 1937 Lamarr?s marriage to Mandl became insupportable for her and she fled Europe for the US on the Normandie liner, where On board, she already began negotiations with Hollywood producer Louis B. Mayer of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio, who had signed Swedish actress Greta Garbo several years earlier and right now was on the lookout for exotic European talent. In Hollywood, Hedy Lamarr soon became invariably cast as the archetypical glamorous seductress of exotic origins and played with the era's most popular leading men such as Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, or Charles Boyer.

Three years after her arrival in Hollywood, as German torpedoes downed boats in the North Atlantic during the first phase of World War 2, Lamarr remembered every ballistic boast she?d absorbed around her husband?s table and put her memories and mathematical talent to work. She came up with the idea of a robust radio communication schema, later called spread spectrum and frequency hopping. In general, the idea was not only to use a single small band frequency for communication as e.g. for radio controlled torpedos, but to spread the radio signal over a broad spectrum and to switch between the various frequencies of the spectrum in an almost random order to prevent detection as well as jamming. In her work she was supported by avant garde composer George Antheil, a son of German immigrants and neighbor of Lamarr, who had already experimented with automated control of musical instruments. Lamarr told her idea to Antheil and together they submitted a sketch of a secret communication system in June 1941to the US military resulting in the grant of US Patent 2,292,387 in 1942. This early version of frequency hopping used a piano roll to change between 88 frequencies and was intended to make radio-guided torpedoes harder for enemies to detect or jam. Although a presentation of the technique was soon made to the U.S. Navy, it met with opposition and was not adopted. Although Lamarr wanted to continue working at the National Inventors Council, back in Hollywood like many other movie stars she was persuaded to raise money for war bonds, selling kisses for $50,000 a smack.

The technology was first implemented on naval ships during the Cuban Missile Crisis in the 1960s and subsequently emerged in numerous military applications. But most importantly, the "spread spectrum" technology that Lamarr helped to invent should foster the digital communications boom, forming the technical backbone that makes cellular phones, fax machines, and other wireless technologies such as Blootooth or Wi-Fi possible. In 1997, more than 50 years and five marriages later, Lamarr was recently given the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) Award for their invention. Antheil, who already died in 1959 was also honored. The award was accepted by Hedy's son accepted for her since she no longer made public appearances, but from her home in Florida she commented "It's about time."

At yovisto you can learn more about spread spectrum communication in the lecture of Prof. Aditya K. Jagannatham from Kanpur.

?Of all the exceptional men and women I have worked with over the years, I can honestly say that Dave Petraeus stands out as one of our nation?s great patriots.? DNI James Clapper

BREAKING NEWS? David Petraeus found to be human. Alert the media, because he?s been treated like a god up until now. I don?t know how the wider media will recover form this revelation. We may have to bring Dr. Phil in on this one.

It?s the bookend to the Stanley McChrystal implosion, which took down another vaunted military figure that was worshiped in his world, though for very different reasons.

I bet you Tom Ricks would like to add an addendum to his new book, stat.

Paula Broadwell has now been identified by Richard Engel on ?Hardball,? as being investigation by the F.B.I., because besides having close contact with Petraeus, she may have had access to emails in her research. Broadwell is Petraeus?s biographer, writing ?All In,? which required traveling with Petraeus, including in Afghanistan. [update]

Fox News Channel jumped into the TMZ ? National Enquirer zone almost immediately, speculating about Benghazi and the hearings this coming week, ready to twirl off into the Twilight Zone even further until Chris Wallace quickly slapped them back into reality. To his credit, Wallace wasted no time in saying that Petraeus has earned the respect to take him at his word on his resignation.

That is absolutely correct.

Jennifer Griffin, a bit later, lauded CIA David Petraeus on air. She praised his ?intense moral fiber,? adding that she got a personal note from Petraeus during her battle with cancer. Griffin is the Fox News personality that falsely reported the CIA was asked to stand down on Benghazi. The coziness of this confession, revealing a relationship beyond professional is worth noting.

One idiot male, Greg Gutfeld, on ?Fox Five? said the affair would trump Benghazi and the four dead. It leaves you speechless.

Mark Halperin was brought on MSNBC to opine on the politics of it. He didn?t have much trouble stepping into the quicksand of Benghazi speculation, even though he has no expertise on the subject. Weirdly, Halperin said there shouldn?t be speculation about the timing and the election, which seems odd to me.

Mr. Petraeus was right to wait until after the election. We?ll have to wait to see if the resignation was timely. But it?s a very serious issue and much more information must be known before playing a dangerous guessing game, the speculation abounding on talk radio, cable and beyond. The only issue right now is the affair cited by Petraeus.

The position Petraeus held in the national security structure of this country demands that he not put himself or this country in a position of danger and that includes blackmail for such a personal failing, which could compromise American security. But what we continue to learn is no amount of responsibility can keep a man from indulging himself, no matter the potential consequences. He?s also holding himself to the same standard of the men and women he has led, so for that alone his integrity is intact.

Even vaunted American patriots are fallible and I can hear Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin second that from the beyond.

Putting on my Dr. Taylor relationship consultant hat?

The shock we?re hearing expressed is fairly predictable, everyone quick to talk about his military career and his service to this country. Few understand how people in power fall so far because of lure of sex, sometimes love, but always because they crave new intimacy.

The other issue is the 37-year marriage of Petraeus in an era where women?s roles have changed, as has the length we live. It provides more temptations than the beginnings of marriage anticipated, back when it was about property and children, with women having no choices but to live their lives predicated on biology.

What ?til death do us part means today demands forgiveness as primary to any agreement, otherwise the statue can rarely be met over time. We?ve been here before, powerful people and institutions brought to the ground.

John Edwards, with the help of his wife, the late Elizabeth Edwards, was willing to defraud the entire country to gain power.

Eliot Spitzer handed his enemies on Wall Street the dagger to take him down through a series of successive and stupid trysts with high priced call girls, which not only ruined his career, but allowed Wall Street crooks to get away.

Governor Mark Appalachian Trail Sanford went AWOL from his job to meet his mistress, whom he is about to marry.

That?s separate from what it means to the director of the CIA to put himself at risk like this, for the sake of sex or love, but we?ve seen similar behavior.

We?ve seen countless Republicans from Larry Craig to John Ensign to Strom Thurmond, but also including the infamous Duke Cunningham bribery and prostitution case that ensnared defense contractors, as well as the Defense Department website peep proclivities that pulled back the curtain on scandalous behavior in our national security structure.

Few could fathom William Jefferson Clinton?s consensual affair, all that he risked, especially given he was married to one of the most fabulous women in the world. I wrote about this in my book, because the risks men take to satisfy their urges is a fascinating human subject.

The heart wants what it wants and so do our loins.

But David Petraeus? Not him.

How do you stop it from happening? Walk away. The second it hits you, stop it. Refuse it. Have an agreement with your spouse or partner that when you feel a sexual tug to another human being you tell him or her. You talk about attractions. Each person in the relationship also has to make sure that sex is happening between you. There are relationships that are dead, with only friendship living, but these are rare in today?s culture and the Millennial Generation is very unlikely to experience them.

The most important thing in a modern marriage is not friendship. It?s intimacy, which can include friendship, but it?s not what it was in the 20th century, because it has to be on a deeper level. It must include honesty on a level that allows two people to talk about interactions when you?re tempted.

Secret feelings are where illicit affairs grow in power and seductiveness. The thrill of the hiding and newness, especially after a long marriage. On a business trip when no one else will know.

It?s heartbreaking for anyone, but for someone like David Petraeus the shame and dishonor he?ll feel without thinking of the media speculation will be choking. It?s just so sad for him. But the public humiliation is something Petraeus will bear, because he?s got broad soldiers.

The crushing disappointment and humiliating public disclosure for his wife is another matter. People think that women don?t have sexual egos. How wrong they are.

Homeowners return to storm devastation on N.J. island

(Reuters) - Homeowners return to an 18-mile (30-km) barrier island off New Jersey's Atlantic coast on Saturday, giving some of them their first view of the devastation wrought by Superstorm Sandy.

Long Beach Island, an enclave of mostly affluent vacation homes, took a direct hit from Sandy, with some homes washed full of sand and seawater and others completely destroyed.

The island, with some 10,000 year-round residents and perhaps 10 times that number in the summer, has been closed to residents except for brief visits to retrieve belongings.

Sandy smashed into the U.S. East Coast on October 29, killing at least 120 people and causing an estimated $50 billion in damage or economic losses. It destroyed homes along the New Jersey Shore and around New York City, cut off electricity for millions of people and knocked out much of the public transportation system.

Days later, protesters were demonstrating in the streets because they were still without power, gasoline rationing was in effect, and commuters struggled all week to get in and out of New York City.

Authorities warned that for coastal communities where thousands of homes were washed away, flooded, or burned to the ground, full recovery would take a long time.

"This is not going to be a short journey," New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said at a news conference on Friday.

And New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who toured the Jersey Shore on Friday, said that many popular vacation spots will not be fully rebuilt by next summer. "This is our Katrina," he declared, referring to the hurricane that washed out New Orleans in 2005.

As homeowners were to return to Long Beach Island on Saturday, an emergency website operated by towns on the island warned that some areas were still without sewer, water and electric service and the entire island is without gas. (http://lbieoc.org)

One community, Holgate, on the island's southern tip, would remain closed because it was still too dangerous to enter.

SECOND DAY OF RATIONING

New Yorkers faced their second day of gasoline rationing on Saturday. Under the system, which was introduced in New Jersey last week, cars with odd- and even-numbered license plates can fill up only on alternate days.

Some 28 percent of gas stations in the New York metropolitan area did not have fuel available for sale on Friday, the same level as on Thursday, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said.

On Friday, protesters took to the streets in Oceanside, a community on Long Island, to protest that they were still without power. "Where is LIPA? Where is LIPA?" they chanted. LIPA is the Long Island Power Authority, a state-owned utility.

Some 434,000 homes and businesses in the Northeast lacked power as of Friday afternoon, down from 696,000 the previous day, the Energy Department said.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said New York City would work with federal authorities to provide electricians, plumbers and carpenters to help fix the worst-hit homes. He said he hoped to get people back into their homes by the end of the year.

Thursday in politics: Talk of compromise, and more

Once again, Diane Sawyer helped to lead ABC's Election Night coverage, and once again, she appeared entirely intoxicated while doing so. At least, that's what Twitter thought. As the last of the polls closed on Tuesday night,?"Diane Sawyer" became a trending topic and not in a good way. John Gruber who runs the blog Daring Fireball tweeted, "Swear to god, Diane Sawyer is drunker than I am." The popular 90s band They Might Be Giants chimed in, "And?Diane Sawyer?declares tonight's winner is... ...

Meg Seitz: This Is for My Friend, Courtney - Huffington Post

This is for my friend, Courtney, who heard some tough news today. Some of us will know what I'm talking about and feeling the second you read the next sentence. With glassy, wet eyes, Courtney told me that her ex-boyfriend got engaged. Let me re-phrase it in the way we choose to hear that: Her ex-boyfriend asked someone else to marry him.

There's no way around it -- that feeling sucks. It sucks because it hurts. It hurts because it hits you in the heart and the brain. In that moment, you've lost someone. Or at least if you don't feel like you've lost that person, you feel like you've lost that wee ounce of hope that solidifies at the bottom of the bottle. You know, that little chunk you don't think about often, but it takes a good ol' shake to dislodge. And then... it's dislodged. And you've got to deal with it. Even after you've stopped dating, you live with that wee ounce of hope for a long time. That 'well, just maybe...' feeling. Well, just maybe he'll come around. Well, just maybe we'll run into each other in the grocery store -- me, in a hipster-like, knit toboggan hat and him, in a ratty, old baseball cap -- and we'll talk and things will be "different" this time. Well, just maybe he'll call late night to say I was the one. Or I'm still the one. And the soundtrack to any these aforementioned scenarios rivals that of Garden State. Then, you hear -- or worse, read via that precious little box in the top, far right corner on the book of faces -- news like Courtney did. And everything changes. And that hope closes up shop. No last call. And you're suddenly aching with emotional exhaustion. He got to a place with her that he didn't get to with you. And you want to know why. Why her? Why not me? What am I not doing? What's wrong with me? What am I going to do now?

As children raised in the glorious 1990s, my sister and I grew up playing Jenga. As much fun as it was to experience the challenge of building this block tower as crazy and tall as possible balanced on what felt like a toothpick, there was something really stressful about the fear and loathing that you'd be responsible for moving that block to higher ground -- to the worst place ever, mind you -- and destroy the whole thing. Because that's what always happened. The thing would fall. You'd feel awful and sad and guilty for one more second before relief washed over you when you remembered that that meant it was time to start a new game. And anything could happen in that new game.

So, here's what you're going to do right now -- you're going to start over. Because you can. And because you must. I can't tell you if it's going to be OK. I don't know that. Because it's up to you right now, my friend.

Don't get me wrong -- starting that new game is scary as hell. And I think, if push came to shove, that I wouldn't choose to do it at age 22 or age 26. But now at age 29, I'm pretty sure I choose to do it almost every week in at least one category of my world. And some weeks, it's maybe every day. Because that's what makes me 29 now and not 22 or 26 anymore. Because I must keep going. Because I can keep going.

And this time is not the last time you'll do it. You'll sit in the car by yourself crying and staring off into space and eating frozen yogurt you told yourself an hour ago that you wouldn't eat. And then it will hit you -- you've got to start over. I've got to start over. And that's OK. Because you've learned something. Or you should have learned something. If you haven't learned anything, I don't know what to tell you. Other than this: Go to Starbucks with your headphones and the Garden State soundtrack and think about it by yourself. You learned something.

When I initially wrote this, I referred to Courtney's news as 'bad news.' That's entirely irrational logic on my part, and, in thinking it through, it occurred to me that it's not bad at all, really. It's just... there. You don't have to do anything with it. Except pick yourself up and start again. And there's really nothing bad about that all. Because it's going to be OK.

Jacksonville 2.20.10 0013 300x225 5 Ways My Driving Has Changed Now That Im A ParentOf all the things that have changed since I?ve become a parent, the way I spend my time in the car is probably one of the most affected. ?I realize that sounds a bit ridiculous, but it?s true. You don?t realize just how many little aspects of your life are affected by a new baby until it happens! Back in my pre-parenting days, we used to be big road-trippers. We?d pack up suitcases, throw the dogs in the backseat, and drive ten hours home to see our family on a whim. These days, an hour in the car is considered a road trip.

And even just on short trips, my time spent in the car is much different than it used to be. ?I used to head out in the afternoon to ?run errands.? This was a loose term meaning I?d be making multiple stops, deciding on a whim where to go next, and having no set finishing time. Now with Cullen in tow, I plan my outings carefully.?Do I have snacks? Is his diaper clean? Do we have enough time before the afternoon nap? ?Spontaneity is out, and calculated, organized outings are in.

Here are a few other ways my driving has changed now that I?m a parent.

1. ?I used to listen to loud music.?These days my radio is either on silent (sleeping baby in the backseat!) or it is playing Caspar Babypants ? my son?s favorite sing-a-long songs. Even though I know I can listen to whatever I want at this point, it?s hard for me to hear his grunts and coughs if my music is up too loud. I keep it pretty low so I can make sure he?s okay in the back seat!

2. ?We used to take long road trips.?I mentioned this above, but we were the ultimate road-trippers ?I loved packing our snacks, throwing our bags in the back, and listening to long books on tape as we cruised through the mountains and the corn fields of the Midwest. Road trips with a baby are the opposite of relaxing ? frequent stops, one of us sitting in the back, constantly monitoring and entertaining a ticking time bomb strapped into a gigantic car seat.

3. ?I used to set out without a plan. ?As new parents we are all used to being warned of sleepless nights and witching hour screaming. But there are other more subtle lifestyle adjustments that can?t be warned about ? they just need to be learned. For me, the hardest one has probably been a lack of freedom. And I don?t mean I am imprisoned by my son. Except that I kind of am. I am a slave to his nap schedule, his mood, and how many snacks I have left in the diaper bag. I used to set out for an afternoon of errands, making multiple stops in different neighborhoods, spontaneously stopping for a walk by the water on a nice day, or even popping in to visit my husband at lunch. These days, my outings are much more calculated. I am armed with snacks, diapers, and toys in hopes of doing something a simple as grocery shopping. His mood directly correlates to the number of times he?s taken in and out of the car seat, so I try to keep it to a minimum.

4. ?I am a much safer driver now. ?I don?t think I was a bad driver before, but I know that I am a better driver now. I vividly remember driving Cullen home from the hospital when he was just a day old. It felt like every car was zooming past us, swerving into our lane, and riding right on our bumper. Of course, these cars were just driving as normal, but I suddenly felt so vulnerable with our precious cargo along for the ride. Even though driving with a baby adds a new element of stress, I try to stay very focused on keeping us all safe for the ride.

5. ?I try to walk as much as possible. ?I am a huge fan of walking, and some of my favorite places we?ve lived in have been the spots where we were able to walk the most. Kids and car seats can be a tough combo, and so I try to really pick and choose what we?re going to do. Is it worth hauling Cullen into a car seat and driving across town? Is there something closer to us that we could walk to? Many times driving is a necessity, especially now that we live a bit farther out from the city, but I try to make our trips worth the ride.

Controlling vascular disease may be key to reducing prevalence of Alzheimer's disease

Tuesday, November 6, 2012

Over the last 15 years, researchers have found a significant association between vascular diseases such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, diabetes type 2, hyperlipidemia, and heart disease and an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease. In a special issue of the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, leading experts provide a comprehensive overview of the pathological, biochemical, and physiological processes that contribute to Alzheimer's disease risk and ways that may delay or reverse these age-related abnormalities.

"Vascular risk factors to Alzheimer's disease offer the possibility of markedly reducing incident dementia by early identification and appropriate medical management of these likely precursors of cognitive deterioration and dementia," says Guest Editor Jack C. de la Torre, MD, PhD, of the University of Texas, Austin. "Improved understanding coupled with preventive strategies could be a monumental step forward in reducing worldwide prevalence of Alzheimer's disease, which is doubling every 20 years."

The issue explores how vascular disease can affect cerebral blood flow and impair signaling, contributing to Alzheimer's disease (AD). The diagnostics of cardiovascular risk factors in AD are addressed, as are potential therapeutic approaches.

Paradoxically, the presence of vascular risk factors in middle age is associated with the development of AD more strongly than late-life vascular disease. In fact, some research suggests that vascular symptoms later in life may have a protective effect against the development of the disease. The physiopathological mechanisms that may underlie this phenomenon are discussed.

To date, trials that target major cardiovascular risk factors in the prevention of AD remain inconclusive but have become an important focus of international research as described by contributors of this special volume in their overviews. The multifactorial nature of AD and the need to identify the proper time window for intervention when designing possible interventions, and methodological issues that will have to be addressed to achieve an optimal design of new randomized controlled trials, are discussed. Promising avenues for treatment, such as the potential of low-level light therapy to increase the rate of oxygen consumption in the brain and enhance cortical metabolic capacity, and the possibility that some antihypertensive drug classes reduce the risk and progression of AD more than others, are discussed.

Dr. de la Torre notes that the presence of vascular risk factors is not an absolute pathway to dementia, and it may be as important to study how or why individuals who are cognitively normal but have vascular risk are able to avoid dementia. "Reducing Alzheimer's disease prevalence by focusing right now on vascular risk factors to Alzheimer's disease, even with our limited technology, is not a simple or easy task. But the task must begin somewhere and without delay because time is running out for millions of people whose destiny with dementia may start sooner rather than later," he concludes.
