Bogart woman fought cancer with a punch

Denise Humphrey of Bogart fought breast cancer and won.

The New Jersey native who moved to the Athens area five years ago, is a four-month breast cancer survivor.

After always having cystic problems with her breast, Humphrey noticed one looked different and had a small lump, but initially let it slide.

?(My breast) caved in a little, and I thought to myself, ?You?re 56 years old. It?s time,? ? Humphrey said. ?I let it go for close to a year, and I stopped having caffeine, because that will make a cyst go away, but it was still there.?

After realizing that something wasn?t right while she was at work, Humphrey decided to make a visit to her OB/GYN.

?She sent me for a mammogram the next day, and after that, we did an ultrasound and a MRI,? she said. ?I had the whole nine yards that first day because they diagnosed me after the ultrasound.?

After being diagnosed with breast cancer on Nov. 11 of last year, she began five months of chemotherapy in December, had a mastectomy in May, five weeks of radiation and then reconstructive surgery on Aug. 24.

?I was stage two by the time I got to the doctor,? she said. ?All in all, if you had to go through this, I had the best of it.?

Humphrey kept a positive attitude the entire time.

?I decided on the way home that I was going to be very strong about this,? she said. ?There would be no whining and complaining. This is what we are dealt with.?

After calling her best friend on the way back from the doctor?s office, she told her husband when she got home. Both thought she was joking.

?I didn?t tell my daughters and son until the treatment plan was in place, because the first thing people do is ask you what are you going to do, and I didn?t know,? she said. ?My sisters were upset because they thought that changed the family history, but it didn?t.?

Humphrey had post-menopausal breast cancer, which isn?t hereditary.

Her children, sisters and other family members only have to worry about being diagnosed themselves as the general public.

?My brother was upset, too,? she said. ?My brother?s best friend, a man I?ve known for 45 years, called to say if there was anything he could do, to let him know.?

Then he set the mood for the entire ordeal.

?When he started to get off the phone, he?s like, ?Hey, try to get a pair of double D?s out of this,? she said. ?I just cracked up, and I said, ?That?s perfect. That?s going to set the tone.? We?ve made a joke out of everything, and I think that?s helped a lot.?

While keeping a positive attitude, Humphrey has been out of work at her job at Lowe?s since January, and she misses it.

?You know when you?re going in a store that you?re very familiar with, and everything is moved around? That?s what I do,? she said. ?I don?t know if I?m going to be able to go back to it.?

According to Humphrey, the hardest part of the journey was her reconstructive surgery. In the operation that was performed on her, called a TRAM, doctors took muscles and fat from her stomach and moved it to her chest, forming a new breast.

?I was on the couch. I couldn?t move, couldn?t watch television and couldn?t focus on anything,? she said. ?After about three weeks, I started feeling better.?

She had support from all of her family, friends and loved ones, including her best friend Bobby, whom she calls her sister.

?Bobby and the pastor and a couple of the other ladies at church prayed over a prayer cloth,? she said. ?I wore it inside my bra, right against where the tumor was. They prayed over it, and I know that?s why it didn?t get any worse than it would, because God had his hands on me. I didn?t worry one second through this whole ordeal because I felt like God had his hand on my heart.?

Man says Bigfoot is in Texas ? and he can prove it

DALLAS, Texas -- When you think of Bigfoot, you may think of the northwest. But, in recent years, there have been reported sightings in East Texas, and even near Dallas.

Now, a Dallas businessman said he has picture proof after snapping a picture in Shelby County.

Once a non-believer himself, he said he is changed man after seeing something move in the woods. He grabbed his camera and captured an image of what he believes is the legendary Bigfoot.

In the picture, a black area that could be seen as a figure is captured amongst the trees in a heavily wooded area. The photographer said that black area is the hairy creature.

The photographer wants to remain anonymous. However, he won't be stepping back from his newfound discovery. He said he plans to release more video evidence in the future.

In Texas, one area known for its Bigfoot sightings is Caddo Lake. According to the Texas Bigfoot Research Center, hundreds of sightings have been reported. The TBRC talked about the sightings in a 2006 Travel Channel documentary.

Obama, Romney both oppose U.S. troops in Syria

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) - President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney say they are both opposed to sending U.S. troops to Syria to end the violence there.

Obama says that while attacks by government forces against Syrian citizens is heartbreaking, getting the U.S. "entangled militarily" would be a serious step. Romney essentially agreed, saying he doesn't want the U.S. military involved in Syria.

Romney said the United States should be playing a leadership role in identifying responsible opposition groups in Syria and making sure they have the arms they need to fight President Bashar Assad's regime.

Obama says the U.S. is working with allies in the region to learn more about the opposition. But he says giving heavy weapons to those groups is not "a simple proposition."

Donovan, Beckham back at practice for L.A. Galaxy

There is news today off the L.A. Galaxy training ground, where David Beckham and Landon Donovan both participated in the team?s Home Depot Center session.

Both players missed yesterday?s 2-2 draw up the coast in San Jose.

While there may be speculation that one or both could play against Seattle in this week?s season finale, even with Sounders midfielder Brad Evans talking about making ?statements? and such in the match, is there really any reason for either man to appear?

The contest with Seattle is set for Sunday. That?s just three nights before the Galaxy hosts Vancouver in one of two knockout matches that night ? in the ?new? MLS first-round, where No. 4 hosts No. 5 in each conference.

Beckham experienced what the team called ankle soreness late last week, so he missed the trip to California. Donovan?s case is more concerning as he deals with a knee injury that kept him out of the last two U.S. national team matches, not to mention Sunday?s match against San Jose.

(MORE: L.A.?s Omar Gonzalez calls San Jose?s style ?embarrassing?)

Yes, one could argue that Donovan and Beckham could use a match to gain some sharpness, to get the feel for game-speed, etc.

But does anybody really think the former England captain and the U.S. national team?s all-time leading scorer have forgotten about ?game speed?? Because I sure don?t.

Besides that, there will be a quick turn-around for the Wednesday winners, so asking Beckham and Donovan to play in the regular season finale could possibly mean asking them to play three times over seven days. Anyone like that idea? (I mean, of course, anyone who isn?t a fan of a potential opponent.)

Treat or trick? Halloween costumes at work

buycostumes.com via CNBC

Is Honey Boo Boo from the reality TV series "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" really an appropriate costume for work?

By Martha C. White

Halloween has stopped disguising itself as just a kids' holiday. The National Retail Federation says Americans will spend nearly $8 billion this year on everything from scary d?cor to candy ? and costumes for the whole family. Nearly half of adults say they plan to dress up, which means there are a lot of people either giddily anticipating or dreading going to work that day.

People in the pro-costume camp say that aside from the fun factor, there actually can be some legitimate career benefits to dressing up like a shambling zombie.

?I?m very into Halloween,? said Dana Pollati. As a digital developer for a publishing company, Pollati said only a few of the roughly 1,000 people in her building wear costumes. Pollati and her husband, who work at the same company, have started what she calls a tradition of over-the-top getups like black-and-white movie zombies and Lego versions of Jersey Shore characters.

The costumes attract a lot of attention, which Pollati said yields unexpected networking benefits. ?I?ve met a lot of people that way,? she said, since colleagues and even higher-ups are eager to introduce her to workers from other departments she otherwise wouldn?t be likely to meet.

In some offices, people say they appreciate the camaraderie of dressing up as, for instance, a reality-show star. ?I think for the team as a whole... it's a good culture thing,? said Corey Beale, a sales manager at software company Hubspot. He said the company?s annual costume contest is a good chance for workers to exercise their creativity in a different way.

Two years ago, Beale said he dressed as ?The Situation? from the reality show Jersey Shore, with gelled hair, an oversized necklace and a dark spray tan. ?It felt really strange being dressed like that on the bus? and getting strange looks from other commuters, he said. ?I felt really awkward.?

{{percent}}%

({{numVotes}} votes)

{{/data.answerData}}

Beale said his trip into work was probably less awkward than that of a (male) colleague who came into work dressed as Snooki, with a trucker hat and voluminous black wig, plus a fat suit that incorporated a bikini.

While an employee wearing a fat suit in drag may all be in good fun at one office, it can be a real-life horror story for human resources at another, said Amy N. Letke, founder and CEO of consulting company Integrity HR.

?It?s always concerning because we live in a time when every employer has to be thinking about a respectful workplace,? she said. ?It gets out of hand so fast.? One person?s idea of funny may be offensive to their colleague in the next cubicle, especially if the costume touches on race, religion or politics.

There's also the minefield of revealing costumes. Letke said that even in a festive atmosphere, people need to keep factors like hemlines and necklines in mind. ?The sexy costumes are the things that just can create huge problems? because an eyebrow-raising Catwoman outfit can torpedo the wearer's professional credibility.

?These things don?t just last for one day,? she said. ?The impression can last for a long time.?

Costumes that elicit an "oh-no-they-didn't" moment from co-workers aren't limited to the overly risqu? numbers, either. Tilmon Brown, a former imaging company salesperson, remembers a Halloween when a co-worker came dressed as a feminine hygiene product.

?He put on a pair of gray long johns and then he took a cardboard tube and cut arms in it ...and then he took the top and filled the top with cotton and had a string hanging out the back,? Brown said. "There was no doubt as to what he was," especially since the colleague painted ?Tampax? on the cardboard.

?I think he thought everybody thought it would be hilarious ...After he walked in, he realized it wasn't a good idea but at that point he was too far in,? Brown said. The man was so sure his costume would be a hit that he didn?t bring a change of clothes, so after a few hours of fielding complaints from offended employees, management sent him home to change.

?A company opens themselves up for whatever when they have a company-sponsored costume event unless you lay down some rules,? Brown said.

If you don't tell them what the rules are, they?re never going to know," Letke said.

Trevor Villet, creative director at marketing company PlanIt, is one example of a person who took his employer's permissive attitude toward costumes to the extreme.

"Two years ago, I was a turd," he said. "I was head to toe, complete with corn ? it was actually styrofoam ? and pipe cleaner flies."

Villet, who had come in a relatively run-of-the-mill costume as the singer George Michael the previous year, estimated it took him about a week to assemble his gross-out creation, which involved long underwear, brown fabric dye and a lot of brown fleece.

His managers didn't reprimand him, Villet said, but the response from colleagues and other professionals who also had offices in the building was another story.

"I bought one of these fart machines and I hid it in the fabric, and just carried it with me," In the morning, Villet rode what he described as a "packed" elevator to his office, accompanied by a woman who worked with him. "I sort of nonchalantly hit the button and let it go,? embarrassing the colleague who had to exit the elevator with him. "I love putting people in awkward situations," he said.

A stunt like Villet's would probably be scarier than any ghost or ghoul to someone like Mary Baier, a former manager at at community bank who now has her own financial services practice. ?My whole thing on the Halloween dressing up was that it was not professional,? she said. As one of the few outliers in a heavily pro-costume workplace, Baier said many of her co-workers called her a ?nerd? and teased her.?

Going to the boss wasn?t an option, either. ?My department head would say, ?Get with it, we need to let our customers see our hair let down,' ? she said. ?I guess I was called a party pooper.?

Things got so bad, Baier said, that she resorted to taking vacation days on Halloween just to avoid the needling. ?I hated it so much.?

Letke said it hurts morale when a worker feels implicitly or explicitly mandated to wear a costume against their wishes.??Peer pressure is so intense,? Letke said. ?Some people may be very self-conscious about what kind of costume they wear because it has a lasting impact."

Do you wear a costume to work on Halloween? Tell us about it on Facebook.?

Electrical stimulation of the esophagus promising treatment for unresolved reflux symptoms

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Clinical evidence of the safety and effectiveness of electrical stimulation of a muscular valve in the esophagus demonstrates promising results in resolving symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) and is being presented at the 77th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology in Las Vegas, NV on October 22.

Three studies examined small numbers of patients who had a device implanted that uses low energy electrical pulses to strengthen a weak or dysfunctional lower esophageal sphincter (LES) which is the underlying cause of GERD or acid reflux. The LES is the ring shaped muscular valve that keeps the acidic contents of the stomach from the esophagus, or food tube.

Two studies by investigators Michael Crowell, Ph.D., FACG of Mayo Clinic Scottsdale and Edy Soffer, MD, FACG of the University of Southern California looked at various endpoints including esophageal acid exposure, improvement in GERD symptoms, and reduction of use of acid-suppressing medications known as proton pump inhibitors. In a study of 25 patients, the investigators found that 77 percent of patients reported either normalization or at least a 50 percent reduction in PPI use. At 12 months after the implant of the device, there was a statistically significant improvement in patients' scores on a scale measuring health-related quality of life for patients with GERD. The authors conclude, "Electrical stimulation of the lower esophageal sphincter is effective for treating patients with GERD over long-term year duration." The authors reported relationships with the Netherlands-based EndoStim BV which manufactures the device.

In a separate and unrelated study, Arjan Bredenoord, MD and colleagues at the University Medical Center Utrecht in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, presented a study at ACG of eleven patients with refractory GERD symptoms with devices implanted in the LES. They found that ten of the eleven patients (91 percent) were able to discontinue PPI medications. Overall, their research revealed a statistically significant improvement in patients' GERD symptoms, as well as a trend in improvement in their esophageal pH.

Pet Policy - Adoption.com Forums

An interesting twist to this question... We have no particular pet policies in our state. Just utd on shots, friendly, no history of biting, etc. Great since we have a very, very large dog who is the friendliest creature on the planet.

However,..... We decided to adopt another dog and would you believe it? The pet adoption agency refused to let us adopt any dog that had a drop of pitbull, rotti, or other so-called 'vicious' breed in its bloodline. Due entirely to our foster parent status. I get it and all, but I found it to be somewhat ironic. The county really didn't care, but the pet rescue wouldn't let us adopt that kind of dog because they didn't want to risk any problems down the road that would cause the county to EVER point their finger at the pooch screaming, "PITBULL!"

So, at the end of the day, DH wanted a boxer mix. But most of them are mixed with pit - or look like they could be. We ended up with a Heinz 57 with no 'vicious breed' bloodlines at all (somebody paid to get a DNA analysis on one of the sibling pups).

Messi! Messi! Messi!

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:51 p.m. ET Oct. 20, 2012

MADRID (AP) - Lionel Messi scored his first hat trick of the season and Cesc Fabregas set up three goals as Barcelona survived Javier Mascherano's ejection and won 5-4 at Deportivo La Coruna in the Spanish league on Saturday.

Fabregas set up Jordi Alba's goal in the third minute, then passed to Cristian Tello for an eighth-minute goal and to Messi for a 3-0 lead in the 18th.

Luis Pizzi's penalty kick in the 26th and Alex Bergantinos' goal in the 37th pulled the hosts to 3-2, but Messi scored again in the 43rd.

Pizzi cut the gap to 4-3 in the 47th, and Mascherano received his second yellow card two minutes later for a foul on Riki. Messi hit the crossbar inthe 51st, dribbled through the defense to score in the 77th for his first hat trick this season and 21st for Barcelona. Two minutes later, Alba lobbed the ball over Victor Valdes for an own goal.

"It was a crazy game in every way," Fabregas said. "We are happy to get the three points after a long international week. We take away our good first half, but those four goals show we have room to improve."

Messi has 15 goals this season, including a league-leading 11. Barcelona (7-0-1) leads second-place Atletico Madrid (6-0-1) by three points and is eight points ahead of Real Madrid (4-2-2).

LONDON (AP) - Chelsea maintained its strong Premier League start by winning 4-2 at Tottenham to preserve a four-point lead over Manchester United and Manchester City.

Juan Mata scored twice between goals by Gary Cahill and Daniel Sturridge as the Blues (7-0-1) overcame a 2-1 deficit and rallied against Spurs and American goalkeeper Brad Friedel. William Gallas and Jermain Defoe scored for Tottenham.

After putting Manchester United (6-2) behind with an 11th-minute own goal, Wayne Rooney scored twice in a 4-2 win over visiting Stoke. Rooney tied the score in the 27th minute and also scored United's final goal in the 65th, with Robin Van Persie and Danny Welbeck scoring in between, with Welbeck eluding American defender Geoff Cameron. Michael Kightly scored for Stoke.

Manchester City (5-0-3) rallied for a 2-1 win at West Bromwich Albion on goals by substitute Edin Dzeko in the 80th minute and the second minute of stoppage time. Shane Long scored in the 67th for West Brom, which had a man advantage after James Milner was given a red card by referee Mark Clattenburg for a foul on Long.

Arsenal lost 1-0 at Norwich, which gained its first win of the season on Grant Holt's 19th-minute goal.

Raheem Sterling scored in the 29th minute at Anfield in a 1-0 victory over Reading and at 17 years, 317 days became the club's second-youngest Premier League scorer behind Michael Owen.

West Ham routed Southampton 4-1, Swansea beat Wigan 2-1 and Fulham edged Aston Villa 1-0.

In the second-tier League Championship, American defender Tim Ream started in Bolton's 3-2 win at home over Bristol City, his first appearance since Sept. 1. Ream fouled Martyn Woolford, leading to Kevin Davies' penalty kick that put the visitors ahead 2-1 in the 21st.

American defender Jonathan Spector was ejected in Birmingham's 1-1 tie against Leicester, receiving his second yellow card in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

TURIN, Italy (AP) - Defending champion Juventus needed goals from substitutes Martin Caceres in the 80th minute and 19-year-old Paul Pogba in the 82nd for a 2-0 win over second-place Napoli that extended its Serie A unbeaten streak to 47 matches.

Juventus (7-0-1) opened a three-point lead over Napoli (6-1-1-).

Lazio (6-2) is four points off the lead in third following a 3-2 win over struggling AC Milan (2-5-1).

Hernanes put Lazio ahead in the 25th with a deflected shot, Antonio Candreva doubled the lead in the 41st with a long-range effort and Miroslav Klose added in the 49th with a volley from the edge of the penalty area.

Nigel de Jong redirected a free kick from Urby Emanuelson in the 61st and teenager Stephen El Shaarawy added his fifth of the season in the 79th.

---

BERLIN (AP) - Defending champion Borussia Dortmund slumped to a 2-1 loss at home to bitter rival Schalke in the 141st Ruhr derby, while Bayern Munich became the first team to start a Bundesliga season with eight straight wins.

Ibrahim Afellay opened the scoring in the 14th minute, when he crashed a low shot in off the left post, and Schalke (5-1-2) went 2-0 up in the 48th, when Marco Hoeger finished off a counterattack after a brilliant through ball from Lewis Holtby. American midfielder Jermaine Jones, coming off a foot injury that limited him to a second-half appearance in the World Cup qualifier at Antigua and Barbuda, entered in the 78th,

Robert Lewandowski pulled one back with a header from Marco Reus' free kick seven minutes later, but it wasn't enough to save Dortmund's 17-game unbeaten run at home or prevent the side falling 12 points behind Bayern.

Thomas Mueller scored twice in Bayern's 5-0 rout of Fortuna Duesseldorf, with Mario Mandzukic, Luiz Gustavo and Rafinha also getting goals for the visitors.

---

Truncated Motherhood | No Points For Style

The setting of a great hope is like the setting of the sun.
The brightness of our life is gone.
?Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I had a therapist about a year and a half ago who gave me a hard time for maintaining Jacob and Abbie?s bedrooms when they had been gone so long. ?It?s not healthy,? said the therapist. ?You have to accept that this is what has happened in your life. Your kids are gone.?

I knew the instant she said it that she was wrong. In the darkest months and years of our alienation, when those kids and I could barely speak words to each other, those beds were the only invitation I could extend to them. The space I reserved for them in my home was proxy for the love they could not hear me speak. When Abbie came home, after the angst and anger were finished, she told me that she always knew she could come back, knew her bed was there for her, and even when she hated me, knew she was welcome in my family.

Jacob will be 19 in just a few weeks. He hasn?t lived in my house for nearly 5 years (and it may be nearly 6 years but the math is far beyond me now), and tonight, for the first time in 19 years minus 52 days, there is no bed for him here. I boxed up his few things and put them in a closet, took his bed to the donation center, and had his dad come get his drumset. With Abbie, I have experienced a miracle, but if there is a miracle with Jacob, it will be of a different sort.

This truncated motherhood is unnatural. Wrong. Jacob was the brightest part of my life, and in five long, excruciating years, I still have not learned to be content with his absence. I don?t know exactly what kind of pain I would be feeling if Jacob was still my son in all the ways, instead of just in the biological ones, as he moved into his adult life, but I know it would be different. He is mostly a stranger to me now. He is the person who made me a mother, a boy-man I find endlessly and intensely fascinating, but he is not really my family anymore. I won?t give up. I could never give up on knowing my magical, enchanting son, and to other parents suffering the horrors of alienation I always say, as long as our children are alive, there is hope. But what hope I had for a relationship beyond a perfunctory one is very small now.

He hasn?t lived with me in a long time, but tonight, for the first time, he really doesn?t live here anymore. There?s nothing for it except to breathe into the pain and pray that some day, we will all be healed; that eventually, I will lay down my grief and walk away from it, even for a little while.

But for tonight I am on my knees, screaming I love him I love him I love him and begging the universe for just one more chance.

Please.

Travel Gear Review: Fanny Wang 1000 headphones | canada.com

The dirty secret of travel is that you can spend a lot of time doing nothing more exciting than sitting around airports, bus and train stations, not to mention travelling on the planes, buses and trains that depart from them.

Keeping yourself entertained during those boring hours is a priority which is why an essential tool for many travellers these days is a good set of headphones.

The headphones are usually plugged into a music player, laptop, tablet, smartphone, inflight entertainment system or any other device in the galaxy of electronics lugged around by today?s traveller.

Fanny Wang sent me a sample of their over-ear model 1000 headphones to test. Last week, I spent about 12 hours in airplanes over four different flights to try them in a real-world setting.

While Fanny Wang offers a noise-cancelling model in its 3000 series of headphones, the 1000s don?t offer this feature. Despite that, the snugness of the fit over your ears is adequate at cutting out a fair amount of background noise, allowing you to enjoy whatever you are listening to.

I watched an in-flight movie, listened to music and some spoken-word podcasts and had no difficulty enjoying any of it. I didn?t even have to turn up the volume to ear-damaging levels in order to hear things over the din of the aircraft.

While reading, I listened to Bird Songs on Bear Creek, a famous nature recording that sounds like its title: birds singing with the sound of water in the background. It?s a relaxing distraction and helps transport you to a place more pleasant than an economy-class aircraft seat. If the Fanny Wang headphones could play back those bird songs with little trouble then listening to loud music in them is no challenge.

While sound performance is the most important aspect of headphones, and the Fanny Wangs deliver on that front, the outside package is just as important to a lot of people, judging from the success of premium-priced models such as Beats by Dr. Dre.

On the style front, Fanny Wangs are every bit as cool looking and come in a variety of colours. They are solidly built and collapse for storage in an included pouch which makes them convenient for travellers.

One of the nicer features is the cord that attaches to the headphones. It can be unplugged completely which reduces the chance of you breaking the cord later on if you are in the habit of wrapping it around the headphones to store them. The cord is also rubberized which makes it virtually tangle free. That?s a big plus in my books.

Also interesting about the cord is a port that allows a friend to plug their headphones into yours so they can listen to whatever you?re listening to.

One observation, although it?s not restricted to Fanny Wangs and is true for virtually all over-ear headphones, is that you can?t comfortably rest your head against an airplane wall if you?re sitting by the window. The earphone?s band over your head slides against the curvature of the hull so your head keeps slipping down. It?s annoying if you want to doze, but you can always wear in-ear headphones. Needless to say, Fanny Wang sells those, too.

So the final consensus is Fanny Wang?s model 1000 headphones are a worthy addition to any traveller?s list of gear as they provide good sound, good looks and useful features to entertain you while you?re on the road.

PROS:
- Good sound reproduction
- Stylish looks
- Cord is virtually tangle-free
- Cord port allows for music sharing
- Collapsible for easy transport

CONS:
- Expensive
- Can become uncomfortable over time

Suggested retail price: $169.95

Fungal meningitis outbreak isn't the first

The growing illnesses and deaths blamed on tainted pain shots from a Massachusetts compounding pharmacy may be the worst such outbreak of fungal meningitis in U.S. history -- but it?s not the first. Five people were sickened and one died in a similar outbreak in 2002.

Administrative Assistant reinstated

She is excited to see that Administrative Assistant is back on the menu of more than 70 career education programs available at the college. ?I see many help wanted advertisements locally as employers seek such office personnel.? ??????????? Administrators had been aware of interest to see the return of this offering. It didn?t take much persuasion nor re-tooling as so much of the curriculum was already in place from several years ago.
??????????? ?Our programs help students attain the necessary skills required for a job in a chosen career field,? said President Larry Lundblad. ?Our instructors are experts in their fields. Labs are equipped with the technology of today. We provide learning opportunities for students of any age.?

NHL cancels games through Nov. 1

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NHL wiped out the third week of the regular season Friday as the lockout dragged on, leaving no more wiggle room if the league hopes to play a full 82-game schedule.

A day after the NHL turned down three counterproposals from players, the league canceled 53 more games. A total of 135 games through Nov. 1 have been scratched, which amounts to 11 percent of the season.

"As expected," New York Rangers goalie Martin Biron told The Associated Press in a text message. "We continue to work hard to find an agreement and get back to playing hockey."

In its third lockout since 1994, the NHL is sticking to its most recent proposal that stated a full 82-game-per-team schedule could be played if the season begins by Nov. 2. The league says a deal must be reached with the union by next Thursday for that to happen.

Two weeks ago, the league called off 82 games from Oct. 11-24.

On Thursday, the union rejected the NHL's proposal made two days earlier that offered a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenues and ensured a full regular-season schedule. In brief talks, the players countered with their trio of offers that were, in turn, quickly dismissed by the league.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said he was "thoroughly disappointed" as he and the league delegation left union headquarters in Toronto. Bettman said that the owners' proposal was the "best that we could do" and added that the sides are still far apart.

"None of the three variations of player share that they gave us even began to approach 50-50, either at all or for some long period of time," Bettman said Thursday. "It's clear we're not speaking the same language."

No new talks are scheduled.

If next Thursday's deadline passes, more games will likely be cut, and the New Year's Day Winter Classic will be the next big event in danger of being lost. The Detroit Red Wings are slated to host the Toronto Maple Leafs in the outdoor extravaganza at Michigan Stadium.

Union executive director Donald Fehr said two of the union's proposals would have the players take a fixed amount of revenue, which would turn into an approximate 50-50 split over the term of the deal, provided league revenues continued to grow.

The third approach would be a 50-50 split, as long as the league honored all existing contracts at full value.

None of it made any positive impression on the NHL.

"This is not a good day," Fehr said Thursday. "It should have been."

The players' association didn't have any immediate comment following the latest cancellations.

Have you underestimated the power of your mind?

If asked, ? which is the most important part of your body to ensure you can maintain a healthy lifestyle?? Some people may respond with their legs so that they are mobile and can easily take part in cardiovascular exercises. Others may say upper body mobility with the use of your arms to do a series of upper body exercises. However any answer involving logic like this is wrong. The most valuable part of any person?s health and fitness irrespective of disability issues is the mind and your will power.

The brain is what stimulates your muscle in the body via the central nervous system, this in itself is vital for causing muscle contractions enabling you the potential to increase your fitness. A healthy lifestyle will never come easily, the honest truth being healthy food can be more expensive, less appetizing and all round more hassle to prepare. Working out takes time out of your day and requires more effort than watching television. If you don?t have the correct mindset then you are never going to achieve it. With this being said to a certain extent its your mind that is going to be holding you back so in this article I am going to see if I can alter your mindset if you are struggling with the commitment of change.

There is never a reason too small to want to get fit, muscular, lower blood pressure, etc? You should also not be embarrassed if it?s for a vein reason such as impressing the girl you have taken a liking to, or just to look better on the beach. You need a reason like this so you can get infected with the fitness bug! The fitness bug once it has a hold of your will improve all aspects of your life, I just want you to find that reason which will allow you to get infected.

I feel comfortable putting a lot of money on the reason many guys take out a gym membership is to impress the opposite sex. I also feel comfortable saying that once they?ve impressed and courted a lucky lady that they will not simply stop working out. It becomes more than that simple idea incepted in your reason all those months/years ago. The benefits of working out will quickly outweigh the hardships. At first you will feel like there is a drain attached to your energy reserves as your body starts to reject the exercise, that drain over the period of a few months will turn to a spring and become an energy source.

If it?s confidence you lack then working out will teach you how to become more confident. In my own and what I recommend in every persons training program is to constantly strive into the unknown whether it be setting a faster 5km run time, a new 5 rep max deadlift weight etc. By tackling physical challenges like these in the gym your mindset is tested, you have to tell yourself and believe in yourself that you can do it otherwise you never will. This then transfers over into your work, when that leap into the unknown is required you will have the confidence and the balls to attempt it.

If you have read this far, then I assume you struggle to get started and this is what I want YOU to do.

1. Write down everything in your life you can improve
2. Provide a reason for each wanting to improve each of these
3. Sifon out the issues that can be solved with working out, everything to do with looks, confidence , stress etc
4. Honestly say to yourself and find a reason for what has been holding you back for each issue.

You now have a blunt list of things in your life you are not happy with and the reasons behind them. I now want you to focus on the ones caused by your actions that are regulated by your mind. This involves eating too many Burger Kings, this is an action taken because of your mind. Having a burger king is unlikely to prevent starvation and if it is then how are you in the internet?

This whole process relies on you being true to yourself regarding each item on this list. You must be critical and blunt and note down every possible thought and event that has caused you to cheat on your diet/workout or just stop you from working out in the first place.

I want you to bottle up the positives so you can keep calling on them as a reminder of why you are doing what you are doing.

Greg Plitt

I for instance fully intend on dethroning this man, I will have no regrets in failing as long as I have done everything in my power in attempting to do so!

If you don?t truely believe within you mind that you are going to have the best body on that beach then it?s never going to be possible. Want some motivation to lose weight check out that post and as always if you have any questions catch me on facebook.
