Boston is recognized as one of the most active innovation communities in the country because it brings together exciting startups, renowned educational institutions, and established technology companies. All of these factors helped make HostingCon 2012, which was held in Boston back in July, the most successful HostingCon to date.

One of the biggest new contributors to its success was the event?s efforts to reach out to local tech and startup communities ? a benefit to both those local startups, and an interesting addition of some prospective users for the regular attendees of HostingCon.

?HostingCon touches so many aspects of our city from academia to commerce,? Tim Stansky, advisor to Mass Innovation Nights and a first-time HostingCon attendee says.

Mass Innovation Nights is a monthly meet-up where companies from IBM and VMware to what Stansky calls ?kitchen table startups? launch new products. So far, 400 products have launched through Mass Innovation Nights since the events started three and a half years ago.

?What HostingCon did well is they reached out to the local community. It is very easy for a tradeshow to take place in a city, and for the city to not even know about it,? Stansky says.

Reaching out to the local community in Boston helped HostingCon attract new attendees, and the mix of new and familiar faces in the hosting industry provided for some interesting networking opportunities.

Jim Spencer, founder of website design and Internet marketing firm JBS Partners, was able to meet his web hosting provider, HostDime, as well as a prospective partner, GlowTouch Technologies. Spencer says he walked away from HostingCon with new ideas for growing his business and expanding in ways he hadn?t thought of before, including offering merchant services.

?Lou Honick, CEO of Host Merchant Services, really opened my eyes to all of the potential services available in the aisles of the convention hall, services that I could offer my clients, including his merchant services,? Spencer says. ?I had not thought strategically about hosting services over the years because it is a secondary offering that is made possible by my primary offerings around website design and development as well as blog and website migrations and conversions.?

Other first-time HostingCon attendees had a very specific idea of what they wanted to take away from the conference.

?I attended HostingCon specifically to learn about security and DDoS protection solutions and hear stories of what others are using to protect their shared environments,? David Gallant, spec-ops at Hubspot says. ?Also, it was located right here in Boston so I was just a few minutes away on the subway.?

Based in Boston, Hubspot is an all-in-one marketing software that has helps customers across 46 countries attract more visitors to their websites, convert more of those visitors to leads and drive customer growth. Rebecca Corliss, Hubspot marketing manager, presented at HostingCon on how businesses can use inbound marketing and social media to drive leads.

?I have been spending a significant about my day here at HubSpot working on security and infrastructure issues, and I found all of the DDoS panels and presentations very informative,? Gallant says. ?The DDoS panel led by Jeffrey Lyon, CEO of Black Lotus, was close to home because issues that I have experienced were discussed among the panel of experts.?

David Sarvai, director of engineering for DSCI Corporation, a New England unified communications company, says he learned a lot from the panel discussions as well.

?The panel discussions which provided insight to how providers run their networks and expo floor were the favorite,? Sarvai says. ?DSCI has a technical nature which begins at the nuts-n-bolts of any technology, and having a firm understanding of vendor offerings and how other providers operate are key.?

HostingCon 2013 will be held in Austin, Texas, from June 17-19 at the Austin Convention Center.
