New $99 Android-based Ouya console backed by Xbox and Kindle veterans

Los Angeles-based start-up Ouya is developing a $99 Android game console for TV that will be "built to be hacked".

All games on the system will be free-to-play, with each console a self-contained dev kit, allowing for a publishing model closer to mobile and social games than home gaming.

While promises of new consoles outside of the big three should be met with healthy skepticism (remember Infinium Lab's Phantom?), the profile and track records of those involved in Ouya's project make for interesting reading.

The company was founded by former IGN head of digital distribution Julie Uhrman, and is backed by the likes of Xbox co-creator Ed Fries; Muffi Ghadiali, who worked at Amazon's Lab126 where he helped to ship the Kindle; and One Laptop Per Child designer Yves B?har.
