There has never been a more appropriate time to discuss a ban on the sale of assault weapons than now, after the horrific events Friday in Newtown.
The National Rifle Association and the firearms industry have done a very effective job in recent years of distorting the conversation about gun violence by phrasing it in terms of problems with criminally insane people.
But the problem is actually the easy sale of assault weapons to law-abiding people.
Sandy Hook Elementary School shooter Adam Lanza's mother apparently was law-abiding and got the weapons legally, but her ease in getting them got them in the hands of her insane son. Nearly all of these mass shootings involved someone using a legally obtained weapon that was solely designed to slaughter people.
Our experience shows again and again that if you allow people to have weapons intended for mass killing, someone is going to use them for that purpose.
It is time society concludes, through new laws, that this is intolerable.
