University of California, Riverside runs entire building floor off of 1.1-megawatt green battery
We're used to batteries powering a lot of devices, but the University of California, Riverside is upping that a notch by charging up a whole floor's worth. The school's Winston Chung Global Energy Center is walking the eco-friendly walk and has started using a huge bank of rare earth, lithium-ion batteries from Balqon to produce 1.1 megawatts, enough to keep Winston Chung Hall's entire first floor humming along while tapping renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. The batteries bank their energy overnight, keeping the throngs of students happy without having to recharge as much or use the regular power grid as a fallback. While it's considered a testbed, the university's giant battery is considered a blueprint for cellular towers and the green power sources themselves -- the combination of which could keep your smartphone up and running with a lot less of an environmental hit.

Ryan Gosling's 'Gangster Squad' Trailer: Five Key Scenes
Gosling reunites with Emma Stone in the star-studded, Tommy gun-packed clip.

One of the fall's most anticipated releases, "Gangster Squad," packs an all-star cast, old-school vibe and a bunch of Tommy guns. Needless to say, we're interested.
The film from "Zombieland" director Ruben Fleischer just got its first trailer, so we've broken it down for you into these five keys scenes.
"Every kingdom comes up bloody"
A centerpiece of the trailer, it's hard to miss Sean Penn even under all of that makeup. In "Gangster Squad," Penn plays Mickey Cohen, an east coast gangster who has come to Los Angeles to become "a god." Cohen is the ultimate evil that the Gangster Squad is going to stop at nothing to put out for good. The trailer gives lots of screen time to Penn, and when you also consider the prosthetics on his face, it's not hard to imagine that Warner Bros. would make a Best Supporting Actor push for him come Oscar season.
Mackie, Gosling and Peña Take Aim
Cohen is not going to have an easy time taking over L.A. with a team like this after him. Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Anthony Mackie, Giovanni Ribisi, Michael Peña, and Robert "T-1000" Patrick make up not only the illustrious Gangster Squad, but a star-studded roster that rivals any major release this year. Between this and "Men In Black III," Brolin is set to have his biggest year since 2007, when he stormed back into the spotlight and starred in every other movie.
Crazy, Gangster, Love
Gosling and Emma Stone created sparks when they starred as an on-screen couple in last year's "," and here they reunited to keep the passion going, albeit 60 years earlier. Stone plays Grace Faraday, the untouchable girl belonging to Mickey Cohen. Untouchable until Gosling shows up, that is. They only have a few moments together in the trailer, but honestly, they were pretty hot.
Let's All Go to the Movies
It's already immensely clear from the trailer that "Gangster Squad" is a movie that loves movies. This is a L.A. film noir in the tradition of Hammett, Chandler and movies with Humphrey Bogart. All of the tropes are there: the Tommy guns, the fedoras. But at the same time, "Gangster Squad" wants to take a new angle on the genre, and we may be seeing some symbolism for that, when the firing squad opens up on a movie theater through the screen.
The Bottom Line
Listen: If your trailer includes a shot of Ryan Gosling casually catching a shotgun and then pointing said shotgun at a bad guy, while uttering the line, "Not anymore," we're going to see your movie. End of story.
Are you planning on seeing "Gangster Squad"? Let us know in the comments!

Yahoo director on hot seat to leave board
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? The flap over a bogus college degree on Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson's official biography has claimed its first casualty ? the director who led the committee that hired him four months ago.
Patti Hart will surrender her Yahoo board seat at the company's still-unscheduled annual meeting. She framed her decision as a commitment to focus on her job as CEO of gambling-machine maker International Game Technology, while allowing Yahoo's board to deal with the fallout from the recent revelations about Thompson's inaccurate academic credentials.
"It has been my privilege to serve Yahoo stockholders and I remain confident in the company's future," Hart said in a statement distributed Tuesday by IGT.
Yahoo Inc. thanked Hart for serving on its board since June 2010 and wished her luck.
Pleasantries aside, Yahoo's own board probably wanted Hart to leave down, said Gene Grabowski, an executive vice president at Levick Strategic Communications, which works with companies facing crises.
"In a crisis, sometimes there are circumstances where you have to make a sacrifice to the gods. This appears to be one of them," Grabowski said of Hart's departure from the board.
Hart, 56, becomes the sixth Yahoo director to depart the board since the company hired Thompson to engineer a turnaround. The exodus will leave Yahoo with nine directors.
IGT Chairman Philip Satre said IGT's board urged Hart to leave Yahoo in order for her to avoid being distracted.
The turmoil swirling around Yahoo is likely to escalate. A dissident shareholder who is seeking to shake up the board even more is demanding access to internal records about Thompson's hiring. And Yahoo's board is conducting its own investigation into why no one flagged an inaccuracy that has been appearing in Thompson's bio for years.
At various times, published summaries of Thompson's academic background have included a computer science degree from Stonehill College that he never received. Thompson graduated from Stonehill, a Catholic school near Boston, in 1979 with a bachelor's in accounting, an accomplishment that Yahoo correctly listed in his bio.
Those earlier inaccuracies have raised questions about whether Thompson deliberately allowed the misinformation to perpetuate and why Hart didn't insist on a more thorough background check before Yahoo hired him.
After Thompson joined Yahoo, the non-existent degree appeared on his bio on Yahoo's website and in documents filed April 27 with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
"It's pretty clear that there was information that slipped through Yahoo's fingertips and someone has to be held accountable," said Gayle Mattson, an executive vice president for executive search firm DHR International.
Hart's plans to leave Yahoo's board were first reported by All Things D, a technology blog affiliated with The Wall Street Journal.
Several experts on corporate ethics and governance have predicted Thompson is likely to lose his job because of the uproar over the fabricated college degree.
An activist hedge fund trying to gain four seats on Yahoo's board already had been calling for the company to jettison Thompson and Hart. Hart laid out her exit strategy after the hedge fund, Third Point LLC, launched its attempt to review Yahoo's internal records so it can learn more about the Thompson's hiring.
In a memo sent Monday to Yahoo's employees, Thompson apologized for the distractions caused by the furor over his inaccurate bio. But he didn't offer an explanation on who was responsible for the deception. He also promised to cooperate with the investigation by Yahoo's board.
After announcing its plans for the inquiry last week, Yahoo provided more details on Tuesday about who will oversee the investigation. The probe will be handled by a committee of three directors who joined the company's board after Thompson's hiring.
Alfred Amoroso, a veteran high-tech executive, will lead the committee, which also will include John Hayes, American Express Co.'s chief marketing officer, and Thomas McInerney, former chief financial officer for IAC/InterActiveCorp. Los Angeles lawyer Terry Bird will serve as the special committee's independent counsel.
The investigation will review whether Thompson ever lied about his academic credentials, as well as Yahoo's own internal controls.
Besides skewering Hart for shoddy research into Thompson's background, Third Point blasted her for an inaccuracy about her own academic history.
Hart's bio had claimed she held a bachelor's degree in marketing and economics. After being confronted by Third Point, Yahoo clarified that Hart graduated from Illinois State University with a bachelor's degree in business administration with specialties in marketing and economics.
IGT also said Hart holds a bachelor's degree in marketing and economic in a recent SEC filing.
"After a thorough review, the IGT board of directors has found no material inconsistencies in Patti Hart's academic credentials," Satre said.

Hasan Minhaj, Indian Comedian, Mocks Ashton Kutcher Popchips Ad
Simply put, yes, the Ashton Kutcher Popchips ad was racist and offensive and deserved to be taken down.
That's the general message sent in the following video by Hasan Minhaj, an Indian comedian who says in the missive to Kutcher in the missive:
"You have a sh-tty accent and you're not even being racist correctly. Okay, look. Maybe Popchips didn't consciously want to offend minorities. But subconsciously they knew they could get away with clowning Indians and Asians. Because that's the way it is now. They wouldn't do that with any other ethnicity."
While making some funny jokes, Minhaj goes on to make some solid points, saying examples such as this paint Indians "in a little box." Watch and react now:

TiVo Premiere XL4 review
With the recent spring TiVo Premiere update we figured it was as good of a time as any to spend some quality time with the newly-renamed TiVo Premiere XL4. The highest model in the TiVo line, the XL4 costs $399 plus $15 a month, or $499 for lifetime service. For the money, it records four HD shows at once with a single CableCARD and offers 2TB of storage. More tuners and space aren't the only things that have changed since we gave the original TiVo Premiere a once-over just two years ago. No, there have been a few notable releases as well as the release of the TiVo Slide Remote and a number of TiVo companion apps for phones and tablets. How all that comes together is exactly what you'll find out should you choose to click on through to the other side.

DirecTV adds 81,000 subscribers during Q1 in the US, increases revenue by 12 percent
Unlike with Comcast, Wall Street experts weren't surprised by DirecTV's latest Q1 results -- in fact, they were quite disappointed. The satellite provider only managed to add 81,000 subscribers in the US of A during the quarter, which is more than a 50 percent decrease compared to last year's Q1 (184,000). Meanwhile, DirecTV did see a 12 percent increase in revenue, pushing the total to about $7.05 billion. That last bit thanks in large part to landing over 590,000 new customers in Latin America, though that didn't keep its current share price from dropping about 2.7 percent to $46.60. Nonetheless, DirecTV CEO, Mike White, says his company "delivered another strong quarter [..] highlighted by double-digit revenue, EPS and cash flow growth." Us? Well, we're wondering why those "roadside ditch" commercials aren't luring more Stateside folks away from cable...
